Shashi Tharoor Clarifies Remarks on Kerala’s Startup Growth After Controversy

Thiruvananthapuram: Senior Congress leader and MP Shashi Tharoor has clarified his stance on Kerala’s startup ecosystem after facing backlash over his recent critical remarks. Tharoor had earlier pointed out the closure of MSMEs (Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises) in the state, raising concerns about the ground reality of Kerala’s industrial and startup growth.

His comments sparked controversy, especially within his own party, as Kerala’s Industries Minister P Rajeeve strongly refuted his claims, citing official data showcasing the state’s strong startup and industrial sector performance. Rajeeve emphasized that Kerala has been making significant strides in fostering entrepreneurship and innovation.

Tharoor’s remarks also contrasted with his previous praise for Kerala’s industrial policies, leading to criticism from Congress leaders. Following the row, Tharoor clarified that he did not mean to undermine the startup ecosystem, acknowledging that growth is happening beyond just official reports.

The controversy has highlighted internal differences within Congress over the state’s economic narrative, even as Kerala continues to position itself as an emerging hub for startups and MSMEs.
