Congress MP Hibi Eden Moves Privilege Notice Against BJP’s Sambit Patra Over ‘Traitor’ Remark

Congress MP Hibi Eden has filed a privilege motion in the Lok Sabha against BJP leader Sambit Patra for calling Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition, a “traitor of the highest order” during a press conference on December 5, 2024. In his letter to Speaker Om Birla, Eden condemned Patra’s remarks as “defamatory and unparliamentary,” asserting that such language disrespects the constitutional stature of the Leader of Opposition.

Eden emphasized that the comments breach parliamentary privilege and demanded immediate action, describing the language as “socially appalling” and an insult to Gandhi’s family legacy of sacrifices for the nation. Congress MP Manickam Tagore also supported the motion, urging stringent measures against Patra.

The controversy arose after Patra accused Gandhi of being part of an alleged “dangerous triangle” with foreign entities attempting to destabilize India, fueling political tensions during the Parliament’s winter session.
