Severe Heatwave Alert: India Braces for Rising Temperatures Amid Rainfall Deficit

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a heatwave warning for multiple regions, forecasting above-normal temperatures in the coming days. February 2025 has been recorded as the hottest February since 1901, with an average temperature soaring to 22.04°C.

Adding to the concerns, India experienced a 59% rainfall deficit between January and February, with central India facing an 89% shortfall and northwest India witnessing 64% less rainfall.

The agriculture sector is at high risk, particularly in Punjab and Haryana, where rabi crop harvesting is set to begin by mid-March. Experts warn that the rising heat, coupled with an ongoing wheat production crisis, could significantly impact crop yields and food prices.

While IMD predicts normal rainfall in March, the escalating heatwave conditions pose a serious challenge to farmers, food security, and overall economic stability. Authorities are urging proactive measures to mitigate the impact.
