TN Finances: CM Vijay Unveils Rs 79,219 Crore Agenda Amid Fiscal Concerns

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government, led by Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, has announced projects and schemes involving a total outlay of Rs 79,219.06 crore through its maiden budget and subsequent Assembly debates on departmental grants.

The announcements come amid criticism from opposition parties that the government’s spending plans could place significant strain on the state’s finances. The government, however, has reiterated its commitment to fiscal prudence.

To mobilise an additional Rs 15,000 crore during the current financial year, the government has constituted a panel headed by veteran economist Montek Singh Ahluwalia, amid concerns over the rising debt burden.

The 17 major announcements made under Rule 110 during the 28-day budget session, which concluded on September 8, focus on modernising infrastructure, achieving energy independence and providing comprehensive relief to the agricultural sector.
