In a significant development, the Supreme Court of India has dismissed exaggerated concerns about the Mullaperiyar Dam, stating that some individuals are creating unnecessary fear about potential devastation in Kerala. The Court highlighted that the dam has successfully withstood 135 years of monsoons, exceeding its originally estimated lifespan by more than double.
As part of its latest directive, the Court has instructed the newly-formed supervisory panel to assess repair and maintenance issues raised by the Tamil Nadu government and submit a report. The panel will play a crucial role in ensuring the dam’s structural integrity and operational safety.
Taking the matter a step further, the Supreme Court has referred all cases related to the Mullaperiyar dispute to a three-judge bench for a comprehensive review. This move aims to consolidate all legal petitions and disputes, ensuring a well-rounded examination of safety concerns and inter-state agreements between Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
The Mullaperiyar Dam, constructed in 1895, is located in Kerala but is operated and maintained by Tamil Nadu. The dam’s safety has been a persistent issue of debate, often fueled by media reports and political narratives. The Supreme Court’s latest intervention seeks to bring clarity, legal balance, and expert assessment to the ongoing dispute.
