Price of Ration Rice for Non-Priority Holders Likely to Increase in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram: The price of ration rice for non-priority cardholders in Kerala is likely to increase, as the state government considers revising rates due to rising procurement costs. The hike is expected to affect Above Poverty Line (APL) families who receive subsidized rice through the Public Distribution System (PDS).

According to sources, the price adjustment is being discussed in light of the financial strain on the state’s food subsidy program. The move comes amid concerns that the Centre’s allocation of food grains to states has reduced, putting additional pressure on Kerala’s ration supply system.

Currently, non-priority cardholders purchase rice at a subsidized rate, but the government may revise the pricing to balance expenses. However, officials have assured that priority category beneficiaries, including Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) and Below Poverty Line (BPL) families, will continue receiving rice at existing subsidized rates.

The final decision on the price revision is expected to be announced soon. Meanwhile, consumer rights groups have urged the government to ensure that any price hike does not burden economically weaker sections.
