Thiruvananthapuram: Hundreds of ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist) workers laid siege to the Kerala Secretariat today, demanding better wages and improved working conditions. The protest, organized by ASHA worker unions, saw massive participation, causing traffic disruptions in the capital city.
The police imposed tight security around the Secretariat, barricading important roads and deploying additional personnel to prevent any untoward incidents. Protesters raised slogans against the government, alleging negligence towards their demands despite repeated appeals.
ASHA workers play a crucial role in Kerala’s healthcare system, especially in rural areas. Their demands include a fixed minimum wage, social security benefits, and regularization of their services. The protest comes amid growing unrest among healthcare workers over job security and inadequate compensation.
Talks between ASHA worker representatives and government officials are expected soon. Meanwhile, authorities are closely monitoring the situation as the agitation continues.
