Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala’s power crisis has intensified, with load shedding expected to continue across the state. Power Minister Sunny Joseph said the situation has worsened due to rising electricity consumption, reduced hydropower generation following weak rainfall, and the obligation to return borrowed power.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that there is little chance of significant rainfall in the coming days. The minister attributed the rainfall deficit to the impact of the El NiƱo phenomenon.
Electricity demand has increased across the country, while Kerala has witnessed a sharp rise in power consumption due to the prolonged dry spell. Power restrictions of 15 to 30 minutes are being imposed after 7 p.m. in different areas.
The minister also urged the public to reduce the use of air conditioners and decorative lighting to help ease the power shortage.
