Abhishek Banerjee Urges Supreme Court to Restore Previous Government in West Bengal

Kolkata: Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee has questioned the electoral legitimacy of the BJP government in West Bengal, urging the Supreme Court to restore the previous government and direct fresh elections in the state within six months.

The Diamond Harbour MP made the remarks following the Supreme Court’s observations on the Election Commission’s ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in West Bengal.

The court clarified that it had not yet ruled on the legality of using the “logical discrepancy” category to scrutinise voters’ details during the revision process.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana observed that its earlier permission for conducting the exercise in West Bengal was only an interim arrangement.

The bench also clarified that its decision in the Bihar SIR case did not constitute a final determination of all legal issues arising from the electoral roll revision exercise.

Banerjee cited the court’s observations while calling for the restoration of the previous government and fresh elections within six months. The remarks come amid ongoing legal scrutiny of the electoral roll revision process in the state.
