In Kerala, approximately 300 out of 400 speed cameras are currently non-operational, primarily due to outstanding maintenance payments owed to the Kerala State Electronics Development Corporation Limited (KELTRON).
The state government had initiated the installation of 675 Artificial Intelligence (AI) cameras under the Safe Kerala project to enhance traffic monitoring and enforce road safety regulations. However, the project has faced challenges, including allegations of cost discrepancies and the involvement of subcontractors lacking prior experience in the sector.
KELTRON, responsible for the technical and maintenance aspects of these AI cameras, has distanced itself from allegations concerning the contract and has clarified its role in the project.
The malfunctioning of these cameras has raised concerns about the effectiveness of traffic enforcement and the safety of road users in the state. The Kerala High Court has permitted the state government to release over Rs 11 crore to KELTRON for the installation of AI cameras, indicating ongoing financial commitments related to the project.
As the situation develops, authorities are expected to address the maintenance issues to restore the functionality of the speed cameras and ensure the continued effectiveness of traffic monitoring systems in Kerala.
