Uttarpradesh Governor Anandiben Patel on Thursday called for a strong public campaign against child marriage and the dowry system, stressing that girls should not be forced to discontinue their education because of early marriage.
Chairing a review meeting of principals from government, constituent and aided colleges affiliated with Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Rohilkhand University, the governor urged educational institutions to create awareness among families about the importance of continuing girls’ education even after they attain the legal age for marriage.
Anandiben Patel directed universities and colleges to actively support campaigns titled “Stop Child Marriage” and “Stop Dowry System”.
She also emphasised the role of educational institutions in promoting social reform and empowering women through higher education.
