Mental Disorders Now Leading Cause of Disability Worldwide: Lancet Study

Mental disorders have become the leading cause of disability globally, surpassing cardiovascular diseases, cancer and musculoskeletal conditions, according to a new study published in The Lancet.

The study, conducted by researchers from The University of Queensland, Queensland Centre for Mental Health Research and University of Washington, found that nearly 1.2 billion people worldwide were living with mental disorders in 2023 — almost double the number recorded in 1990.

Researchers said the sharp rise was mainly driven by increasing cases of anxiety and depression. Adolescents aged 15 to 19 and women were found to be disproportionately affected.

The findings highlight the growing global mental health crisis and the urgent need for stronger healthcare support and awareness programmes, the study noted.
