Nirmala Sitharaman Slams DMK, Congress Over Women’s Representation in Tamil Nadu

New Delhi: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday criticised the DMK and its ally Congress, alleging that their stance has cost Tamil Nadu an opportunity to enhance women’s representation in Parliament and the state assembly.

Calling the DMK “short-sighted” and “anti-women,” Sitharaman said the state could end up losing more instead of gaining due to its opposition to key legislative proposals.

Her remarks come amid a political row over the proposed implementation of women’s reservation in legislatures from 2029, along with a plan to increase Lok Sabha seats.

Earlier, AIADMK leader Edappadi K Palaniswami also criticised the ruling DMK, alleging that Chief Minister M. K. Stalin lost an opportunity to boost Tamil Nadu’s political representation, including a potential increase of 20 Lok Sabha seats, by opposing the bill.
