NASA Offers $20,000 for Innovative Moon Rescue Design Challenge

NASA has launched a global competition to develop an innovative rescue system for stranded astronauts on the Moon. With a prize of up to $20,000, the challenge invites designs capable of transporting a fully suited astronaut across the Moon’s rugged terrain in emergencies. The system must be lightweight (under 50 pounds), compact, and functional under the harsh lunar conditions, including extreme temperatures and abrasive regolith dust.

Key features for the rescue system include ease of deployment, rapid usability, and safety for both the incapacitated astronaut and their rescuer. Designs resembling sleds or wheeled stretchers are encouraged, with additional bonus points for adaptability and multi-functionality.

This initiative aligns with NASA’s Artemis program, aimed at advancing space exploration and ensuring astronaut safety. Innovators worldwide have until January 23, 2025, to submit their entries, contributing to the future of lunar missions and beyond.
