New Delhi: More than 130 Indians, including a large number of pilgrims travelling for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, are reportedly missing in Nepal following devastating flash floods that swept through several central districts, officials said.
The floods have also left many other Indian nationals stranded as large parts of the affected areas remain cut off. Among those reported missing are 37 tourists from Tamil Nadu and 32 from West Bengal, according to information available from officials and state authorities.
The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu, along with the governments of Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Kerala, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, has set up helplines to assist Indians affected by the disaster and help their families obtain information about their whereabouts.
At least 59 of the missing Indians were pilgrims undertaking the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, according to Samrat Tours and Travel, which was associated with some of the travellers.
Communication with several affected areas remains difficult due to the scale of the flooding, leaving authorities with limited information about the condition and location of many Indian nationals.
Rescue and relief efforts are underway in Nepal, while Indian authorities are coordinating with local officials to trace the missing and provide assistance to those stranded.
