Kathmandu: The death toll from devastating flash floods in Nepal has climbed to 162, with several people, including security personnel and foreign tourists, still missing, according to a media report.
The disaster, described as one of Nepal’s worst in recent years, caused extensive destruction across three districts on Wednesday, sweeping away homes, infrastructure and other properties.
According to The Kathmandu Post, the floods were triggered after an avalanche blocked the flow of the Lhende tributary of the Bhotekoshi River. The surging waters first struck Timure, near Rasuwagadhi along Nepal’s border with China, before causing widespread destruction downstream.
Rescue and relief operations are continuing in the affected areas as authorities search for those missing and assess the extent of the damage.
The disaster has also raised concerns over the safety of foreign nationals, including tourists who were in the affected regions when the flash floods struck.
