Senior BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi has called on the Centre and governments of Himalayan states to step up efforts to protect the Himalayan ecosystem and ensure sustainable development in the region.
In a post on X, Joshi expressed concern over what he described as growing pressure on the Himalayas from tourism, travel-related activities and development projects.
He said some governments were proceeding with such initiatives despite reports and concerns raised by scientists, geologists, earth science experts and specialists in agriculture and biodiversity.
Joshi said the region’s fragile environment and natural resources were facing increasing pressure, affecting the Himalayan ecosystem’s ability to withstand such activities.
He also pointed to the difficulties faced by people living in the Himalayan region in recent years due to environmental disasters and the increasing burden on the region’s natural systems.
Joshi urged the authorities to promote development plans that balance environmental conservation, national security, economic development and the protection of Himalayan culture.
