Kerala University Laws (Amendment) and Private Universities Bills Spark Heated Debate in Assembly

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Assembly witnessed a heated debate over the Kerala University Laws (Amendment) Bill and the Private Universities Bill, with both the ruling and opposition parties engaging in intense discussions on the implications of the proposed legislation. Amid strong objections raised by the opposition, the bills were referred to the Subject Committee for further review.

The Kerala University Laws (Amendment) Bill seeks to restructure the governance of state universities, particularly regarding the appointment of Vice Chancellors and the role of the Chancellor. The opposition alleged that the bill would grant excessive control to the government over universities, undermining their autonomy. However, the government defended the bill, stating that it aims to improve transparency and efficiency in university administration.

The Private Universities Bill, which proposes to permit private entities to establish universities in Kerala, also drew sharp criticism. The opposition, led by UDF, argued that the bill could pave the way for commercialization of higher education and compromise academic standards. The ruling LDF, however, maintained that allowing private universities would expand educational opportunities in the state while maintaining strict regulatory oversight.

Following the intense deliberations, the Assembly decided to refer both bills to the Subject Committee for detailed scrutiny. The decision highlights the contentious nature of the proposed amendments and their potential impact on Kerala’s higher education system.
