Bengaluru: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar has ordered strict action after child labour was detected during a surprise inspection at the APMC market in Yeshwanthpur.
Shivakumar directed the police to arrest those responsible for employing children and warned that officials, including the DCP, ACP, DSP and police inspector, could face suspension if immediate action was not taken.
The Deputy Chief Minister was interacting with farmers, workers and traders during his visit when some people brought the issue of child labour at the market to his attention. A subsequent inspection confirmed that children were working at some shops.
Following his directions, a special team led by Bengaluru North Division Deputy Commissioner of Police B S Nemagowda conducted an inspection of the market. Police found 19 children engaged in labour.
Among them, 13 were from Bihar, including 12 boys and one girl. Two children were from West Bengal, two from Uttar Pradesh, and one each from Rajasthan and Karnataka.
In addition, the police rescued around 10 children working at roadside stalls in the area. All the rescued children were handed over to the care of the Child Welfare Committee.
Police have registered four FIRs at the RMC Yard police station against shop owners allegedly involved in employing children. Further investigation and action against those responsible are underway.
