Kerala Sees Surge in UV Radiation Levels; Authorities Issue Health Advisory

Kerala is witnessing a sharp rise in ultraviolet (UV) radiation levels, with multiple regions, including Kollam’s Kottarakkara and Munnar, recording dangerously high UV indices. The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has issued a warning after UV levels soared to an alarming index of 9 in districts such as Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Alappuzha, and Idukki.

A long-term study, “Assessment of UV Index in Kerala,” analyzing 18 years of data (2004–2022), has revealed concerning trends. Only 2.11% of recorded UV levels were in the safe range (1–5), while a staggering 46% fell into the high-risk category (8–10). Even more alarming, about 33% of readings exceeded the extreme danger threshold (above 11), signaling an urgent need for preventive measures.

Health experts warn that prolonged exposure to high UV radiation increases the risk of skin damage, eye disorders, and even skin cancer. The SDMA urges the public to take extra precautions between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., when UV levels peak.

Recommended protective measures include:

  • Wearing long-sleeved clothing
  • Applying broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30+)
  • Using wide-brimmed hats and UV-protection sunglasses
  • Avoiding direct sun exposure during peak hours

With UV radiation levels rising rapidly, residents are advised to stay updated on daily UV index forecasts and follow safety guidelines to reduce health risks. Authorities emphasize that early awareness and protective measures are key to safeguarding public health against extreme sun exposure.
