In a significant step towards rebuilding lives after the devastating July 2024 landslides in Wayanad, which claimed over 400 lives, the Kerala government has unveiled plans to construct two modern townships for the affected families.
The state cabinet has approved a master plan for the project, designating 58.50 hectares in Elstone Estate (Kalpetta) and 48.96 hectares in Nedumpala Estate (Meppadi) for the township development. With the Kerala High Court’s clearance under the Disaster Management Act, 2005, the state is moving swiftly to acquire the required land.
The construction has been entrusted to the Uralungal Labour Contract Co-operative Society, with KIIFCON overseeing the project. The final list of beneficiaries is expected to be released by January 25, 2025.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan assured that land ownership in disaster-hit areas will remain with the original owners, and collective farming initiatives will prevent forest encroachments. Additionally, resale of rehabilitated homes will not be permitted to ensure long-term settlement stability.
These state-of-the-art townships will feature housing, schools, healthcare centers, and employment opportunities, aiming to offer a comprehensive rehabilitation solution for affected families.
This initiative marks a critical milestone in Kerala’s disaster recovery efforts, promising hope and stability for the displaced families of Wayanad.
