Kerala Approves Draft Guidelines for Floating Solar Power Plants

Thiruvananthapuram: In a major push towards renewable energy, the Kerala government has approved draft guidelines for setting up floating solar power plants across the state. This initiative aims to harness clean energy by utilizing water bodies that are unsuitable for agriculture or fishing, making sustainable use of available resources.

The groundwork for this project began in December 2022 when a high-level committee, led by the Chief Secretary, was formed to assess the feasibility of installing floating solar plants in brackish and saline water bodies, as well as reservoirs. The committee, consisting of top officials from the power, fisheries, revenue, finance, local self-government, irrigation, and forest departments, was tasked with formulating guidelines and developing an action plan for these projects.

Kerala has already made significant strides in adopting floating solar technology. In June 2022, Tata Power Solar Systems Limited commissioned a massive 101.6 Megawatt Peak (MWp) floating solar project in Kayamkulam, covering 350 acres of water. Similarly, in April 2022, NTPC launched commercial operations of a 22 MW floating solar capacity at its Kayamkulam facility, part of a larger 92 MW project.

By focusing on floating solar initiatives, Kerala is reinforcing its commitment to expanding renewable energy infrastructure while making efficient use of its water resources. This ambitious move is expected to enhance the state’s clean energy portfolio and set a benchmark for other regions aiming for sustainable energy solutions.
