Thiruvananthapuram: Rising temperatures across Kerala have led to a record surge in electricity consumption, with the state registering a peak demand of 5,933 MW on Monday evening—the highest ever recorded.
Officials said the total power usage for the day stood at 112.16 million units, marking the highest consumption for the month so far. Barring high-range districts like Idukki and Wayanad, most parts of the state continue to experience intense heat.
Palakkad recorded the highest temperature at 39.2°C, with forecasts indicating it could touch 40°C. Kollam is also expected to see temperatures rise to around 39°C, while districts including Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod may experience highs of up to 37°C. Thiruvananthapuram and Malappuram are likely to record temperatures around 36°C.
Authorities have urged people to take precautions against heat-related illnesses, including sunstroke and dehydration. Residents are advised to stay hydrated, avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours, and limit outdoor activities.
