Consumer Court Orders TV Manufacturer to Refund Customer Over Repeated Defects

The Thrissur Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has ruled in favour of a consumer who filed a complaint alleging persistent defects in a television set purchased from a leading electronics manufacturer.

The complaint was filed by Shajan V.C., a resident of Kallampara, Vadakkanchery in Thrissur district. He had purchased the television for ₹29,500. However, within four months of purchase, the TV developed a fault that prevented images from being displayed.

According to the complaint, technicians repaired the television whenever defects were reported, but the problem repeatedly recurred. The television reportedly developed faults on nine occasions, prompting the consumer to approach the Consumer Court.

An expert commissioner appointed by the court inspected the television and submitted a report confirming the defects. After examining the evidence, the Consumer Commission, comprising President C.T. Sabu and members Sreeja S. and R. Ram Mohan, held the manufacturer responsible for deficiency in service.

The Commission directed the company to refund the television’s purchase price of ₹29,500, along with 6 per cent interest from the date of filing the complaint. It also awarded ₹10,000 as compensation for the inconvenience suffered by the complainant and ₹5,000 towards litigation costs.

Advocate A.D. Benny appeared on behalf of the complainant.
