Global Celebrations Mark Bakrid: A Festival of Faith, Sacrifice, and Unity

Kochi: Millions of Muslims around the world are celebrating Bakrid today — a sacred festival that honors unwavering faith, selfless sacrifice, and deep-rooted compassion. Also known as Eid al-Adha, the “Festival of Sacrifice” derives its name from the Arabic word Adha, meaning sacrifice.

The festival commemorates the profound devotion of Prophet Ibrahim, who was willing to sacrifice his son Ismail in obedience to God’s command — a story that continues to inspire believers across generations.

Bakrid also marks the grand finale of the annual Hajj pilgrimage, one of Islam’s five pillars. This year, more than two million pilgrims have converged in the holy city of Mecca, reaffirming their spiritual commitment in an awe-inspiring display of unity and devotion.

The celebration spans four days — from the 10th to the 13th of Dhul Hijjah, the final month in the Islamic lunar calendar. As families gather for prayers, feasts, and charity, the essence of Bakrid shines through: a message of togetherness, empathy, and peace.

“Each Bakrid celebration reinforces the spirit of unity and the love for fellow beings,” said Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in his heartfelt greetings to the community.
