New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has lauded the Indian contingent for their record-breaking performance at the 2025 World Para-Athletics Championships held in New Delhi — the nation’s first time hosting the prestigious global event. In a post on X, the Prime Minister described the achievement as “historic,” congratulating the athletes for winning 22 medals, including six golds, marking India’s best-ever performance at the championships. Modi expressed pride in the para-athletes, calling their success an inspiration to millions and a testament to India’s growing strength in inclusive sports.
India’s medal tally — 6 gold, 9 silver, and 7 bronze — surpassed its previous records in Dubai (2019), Paris (2023), and Kobe (2024). Over 2,200 athletes from more than 100 countries competed across 186 events at Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, making it one of the largest editions in the event’s history. Many of India’s medal winners are part of government initiatives such as the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) and Khelo India, underscoring the country’s expanding support system for para-athletes.
The Prime Minister also commended the event’s organizers and extended gratitude to international participants, emphasizing that India’s hosting of the championship reflects its commitment to empowering differently-abled athletes and promoting sporting excellence on the global stage.
