Chandigarh: Punjab Power Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sond on Saturday said a severe shortage of coal across the country has aggravated the power crisis in the state, leading to a 1,500 MW decline in power generation.
According to an official statement, the shortage has forced major thermal power plants in Punjab to operate below their full capacity. The minister said the nationwide coal shortage has affected around 63 GW of power supply.
Reduced coal supplies from the Centre have particularly impacted the Rajpura and Talwandi Sabo thermal power plants, putting further pressure on Punjab’s power system, he said.
Sond urged the central government to take immediate and concrete measures to address the coal shortage and ensure uninterrupted electricity supply to households, businesses and industries across the state.
