Guwahati: The Assam government on Tuesday announced a series of relief measures for families affected by this year’s devastating floods, including an additional ₹5 lakh compensation for the next of kin of those who lost their lives.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, addressing the public through a Facebook Live session, said the state has also relaxed the eligibility norms for receiving ex gratia assistance. Earlier, families were required to submit a post-mortem report to claim the compensation. Under the revised rules, a certificate issued by the Circle Officer will now be sufficient for processing the payment.
“So far, the rule was that a post-mortem report had to be submitted to avail government ex gratia by the next of kin. We have decided to do away with this, and a certificate from the Circle Officer will suffice,” Sarma said.
The Chief Minister also announced that interim financial assistance would be provided to severely affected families and students using donations received in the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
The latest measures are aimed at ensuring quicker financial support for flood-affected families and easing procedural hurdles in the aftermath of one of the state’s worst flood seasons.
