The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has indicated that load shedding may have to be extended as the state continues to face a severe power crisis. The utility also stated that it may be forced to procure electricity at rates exceeding the existing price cap.
At present, the upper limit for purchasing power has been fixed at ₹10 per unit. However, despite inviting tenders for power procurement, KSEB has not received any bids for this month. The board is also required to return electricity borrowed earlier, further adding to the pressure on the state’s power supply.
The situation has been worsened by declining water levels in reservoirs, which has affected hydroelectric power generation and intensified Kerala’s energy shortage.
Earlier, KSEB had announced that, due to the ongoing power crisis, limited power restrictions would be imposed from 6 p.m. to midnight until June 30. The board warned that if the shortage persists, these measures may need to be continued beyond the current deadline.
