District Collector and Chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority, Shikha Surendran, has directed all departments to implement precautionary measures after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an Orange Alert for Thrissur district on Thursday.
The Collector instructed authorities to complete all preparedness activities in accordance with the State Disaster Management Authority’s 2025 Monsoon and Northeast Monsoon Disaster Response Guidelines, commonly known as the “Orange Book.”
With forecasts predicting very heavy rainfall ranging from 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm within 24 hours, the district administration has warned of increased risks of landslides, waterlogging, flash floods, and mudslides. Residents living in vulnerable areas and locations identified by expert committees as disaster-prone have been advised to move to relief camps or relatives’ houses during daytime as a precautionary measure.
Tahsildars have been directed to ensure that company managements provide adequate safety measures for workers residing in labour camps. Authorities have also been instructed to closely monitor daily weather updates and forecasts in the coming days.
The district administration will implement action plans on a war footing to prevent urban flooding. Warning boards must be installed at road construction sites, while trees, hoardings, and signboards posing risks during strong winds will be removed immediately.
The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has been asked to ensure the safety of electric poles and transformers and keep 24-hour control rooms operational. If heavy rainfall continues during the night, traffic restrictions may be imposed on roads vulnerable to landslides.
Control rooms at the taluk and local self-government levels will function round the clock. Officials have also been instructed to report rising water levels in rivers and dams to the district control room every hour.
Tourists will be issued necessary safety advisories, and the district’s Incident Response System (IRS) has already been activated to coordinate emergency response efforts, the Collector said.
