Will Do Everything to Oppose Kerala’s Malayalam Bill: Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah

Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has strongly opposed Kerala’s proposed Malayalam Language Bill, stating that it “strikes at the heart of linguistic freedom and the lived reality of Kerala’s border districts, especially Kasaragod.” He asserted that his government would take all possible steps to resist the legislation if it adversely affects the rights of linguistic minorities.

Reacting sharply to the proposed bill, Siddaramaiah said language policies must reflect ground realities and cultural diversity, particularly in border regions where people have historically used multiple languages, including Kannada. He warned that imposing restrictions through legislation could create social friction and undermine the constitutional spirit of linguistic harmony.

The Karnataka Chief Minister emphasised that language should unite, not divide, and urged Kerala to reconsider the bill through dialogue and consultation with neighbouring states and affected communities. He also hinted at raising the issue at appropriate inter-state and constitutional forums if required.

The proposed Malayalam Language Bill has sparked debate across political circles, with concerns being raised about its potential impact on administration, education, and daily life in multilingual border areas. As discussions intensify, Siddaramaiah’s remarks signal a possible inter-state political and cultural standoff over language rights.
