Islamabad: A strong earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale struck northeastern Afghanistan on Saturday evening, sending tremors across several cities in neighbouring Pakistan. There were no immediate reports of casualties or property damage.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake’s epicentre was located about 43 kilometres south of Jurm district in Afghanistan’s Badakhshan province.
Pakistan’s Meteorological Department (PMD) recorded the quake at a magnitude of 5.9, stating that it occurred at 6:35 pm local time. The department said the epicentre was in Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region at a depth of 178 kilometres.
Authorities in both countries are monitoring the situation, and no major damage has been reported so far.
