New Delhi: Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Saturday clarified his recent remarks on Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ programme, saying they were not intended as an attack on the party or its leadership.
Tharoor said the media had interpreted his comments as criticism of his own party and its leadership, which was not what he intended.
He stressed that political parties must open their doors to younger generations and create opportunities for them to participate in politics and have a greater role in shaping the country’s political future.
Speaking at an event in Maharashtra on Friday, Tharoor had said opposition parties needed to recognise that they had failed to provide a route into their organisations for young people like those who had gathered at Jantar Mantar last month.
He also observed that Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ programme had not generated as much resonance among Gen Z as the protest by the “Cockroach Janata Party”, as he referred to the youth-led demonstration.
Tharoor said his remarks were aimed at highlighting the need for political parties to engage more effectively with young people rather than criticising any particular party leader.
