Singer M.G. Sreekumar Fined ₹25,000 for Dumping Waste into Kochi Backwaters

Renowned playback singer M.G. Sreekumar has been slapped with a ₹25,000 fine by the Mulavukad Panchayat for allegedly dumping waste into the Kochi backwaters. The incident came to light after a foreign tourist captured a video showing garbage being discarded from a residence in Mulavukad Panchayat. The footage, which was shared on social media and tagged to Minister M.B. Rajesh, prompted local authorities to launch an investigation. Officials verified the date, time, and location of the incident before imposing the penalty under the Panchayati Raj Act. Though the video confirmed the waste was dumped from Sreekumar’s residence, the exact individual responsible could not be identified. Reports suggest that Sreekumar has already paid the fine. Meanwhile, Minister Rajesh has urged citizens to report public littering incidents by sharing evidence via WhatsApp at 94467 00800, with the government announcing rewards for those who report such violations. The case highlights Kerala’s strict stance on environmental protection and its commitment to keeping public spaces clean.
