New Delhi: The Centre on Monday called on states and Union Territories to speed up skill development programmes under Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0 to build a trained and locally available workforce for maintaining rural drinking water systems.
The Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DDWS) held its first national virtual conference with states and UTs on the issue, following a departmental summit held on September 1-2 to strengthen the rural water workforce.
DDWS Secretary Ashok K K Meena said the long-term success of the Jal Jeevan Mission would depend not only on creating water infrastructure but also on having skilled personnel to operate, maintain and monitor rural water supply systems.
The initiative aims to strengthen local technical capacity and ensure the sustainability of rural drinking water infrastructure.
