New Delhi: Indian Railways has announced stricter measures for passengers carrying luggage beyond the prescribed weight limits, introducing additional charges for excess baggage. The move comes soon after the Railways increased fares for long-distance train services, signaling a broader tightening of travel regulations.
Drawing parallels with airline baggage policies, the Railways said carrying luggage beyond the permitted limit causes inconvenience to co-passengers and affects comfort and safety onboard. As a result, passengers exceeding the allowed luggage weight will now have to pay extra charges based on the extent of the excess.
According to the revised norms, a second-class passenger is allowed to carry 35 kg of luggage free of cost, while up to 70 kg can be carried by paying additional charges. Sleeper class passengers can carry 40 kg free, with a maximum limit of 80 kg upon payment. Passengers traveling in AC 3-tier or Chair Car are entitled to a free allowance of 40 kg, which also marks the maximum permissible limit.
For First Class and AC 2-tier passengers, the free luggage allowance is 50 kg, with a maximum limit of 100 kg. AC First Class passengers enjoy the highest allowance, with 70 kg permitted free of cost and the option to carry up to 150 kg by paying extra charges.
Indian Railways has urged passengers to strictly adhere to the prescribed luggage limits to avoid penalties and ensure a comfortable journey for everyone on board.
