Public Alerted About Fake Mobile Recharge Offers Targeting Sankranti Shoppers

With Sankranti around the corner, authorities have raised alarms over fraudulent mobile recharge offers circulating via text messages and online platforms. These deceptive schemes often promise tempting benefits like extra talk time or data, leading users to click on malicious links that put their personal and financial information at risk.

How the Scam Works:

  • Deceptive Messages: Fraudulent messages offer exclusive deals, such as “Recharge ₹200 and get ₹1,000 talk time,” luring users into clicking.
  • Malicious Links: These messages contain links that direct users to fake websites, which resemble legitimate telecom provider sites.
  • Data Theft: Users are asked to enter sensitive details such as One-Time Passwords (OTPs) and banking information, which scammers use to access bank accounts.

Official Warnings: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has blocked over 100,000 scam messages in an effort to protect users. However, such fraudulent offers continue to proliferate, urging mobile users to stay vigilant.

How to Protect Yourself:

  • Verify Offers: Avoid clicking on suspicious links. Instead, contact your telecom provider directly to verify any recharge deals.
  • Report Suspicious Activity: If you suspect you’ve fallen for a scam, report it immediately to prevent further damage.
  • Stay Informed: Keep an eye on official communications from your telecom provider and TRAI for updates on legitimate offers and new scams.

By staying alert and informed, users can safeguard their financial security during the festive season and avoid falling victim to these misleading schemes.
