Prime Minister Narendra Modi was set to visit the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, on February 5, 2025. However, his visit is likely to be postponed or canceled following a tragic stampede at the Sangam area, which claimed at least 30 lives and left around 60 injured. The unfortunate incident occurred as thousands of pilgrims gathered for a holy dip on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya.
In response to the tragedy, PM Modi expressed deep sorrow and extended condolences to the victims’ families. He assured that the local administration is providing all necessary assistance and wished a speedy recovery to the injured. Modi also spoke to Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath to assess the situation and ensure that relief operations are effectively underway.
The Maha Kumbh Mela, which began on January 13, 2025, is the world’s largest religious gathering, drawing millions of devotees to the sacred confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers. The event is scheduled to continue until February 26, 2025.
Before the tragedy, several top leaders were scheduled to visit the Maha Kumbh. Union Home Minister Amit Shah planned to attend on January 27, while Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar was expected on February 1. However, in light of the stampede, these visits may also be reconsidered.
Authorities have launched a thorough investigation into the cause of the stampede and are taking measures to prevent future incidents. Ensuring the safety and well-being of pilgrims remains a top priority as the event continues.
