Congress to Stick to 1937 Resolution on Vande Mataram

New Delhi: The Congress Working Committee (CWC) on Wednesday decided to adhere to the party’s 1937 resolution on Vande Mataram, stating that only the first two stanzas of the National Song will be sung at all Congress events hereafter.

Addressing a press conference after a meeting that lasted more than four hours, Congress general secretary K C Venugopal said the party’s position on the issue was clear and that it stood by the decision taken by its top leadership in 1937.

“There is no confusion on that. The Congress president categorically said so yesterday in Goa. Today, we also discussed the issue in the CWC meeting. Our stand is very clear that we will abide by the 1937 resolution,” K C Venugopal said.

He said the 1937 resolution was adopted when the Congress’s top leadership, including Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Rabindranath Tagore, Subhas Chandra Bose and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, was associated with the party.

According to the decision, only two stanzas of Vande Mataram will be sung at Congress party events in accordance with the 1937 resolution.
