Kerala’s General Education Minister, V. Sivankutty, has announced that the minimum age for Class I admissions will be raised to six years, starting from the 2026-27 academic year. This move aligns with scientific research, which suggests that children are more cognitively and emotionally prepared for formal education at this age.
Currently, children in Kerala can enroll in Class I at the age of five. However, statistics reveal that over 52% of students in the state already begin Class I at six years old. The revised policy aims to create a standardized admission process while ensuring students are better equipped for academic success.
By implementing this change, the Kerala government reinforces its commitment to fostering a strong educational foundation, prioritizing the holistic development and well-being of young learners.
