Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday backed the Centre’s position on the proposed levy on certain UPI transactions, while stressing the need to safeguard ordinary consumers.
Abdullah said the charge would not apply to all UPI transactions and clarified that person-to-person money transfers would remain free.
“Person-to-person money transfers carry no charge. Individual consumers will also not be charged unless they cross a specified ceiling,” he told reporters in Srinagar.
The chief minister said operating and maintaining the infrastructure that supports the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) involves significant costs.
However, he emphasised that any move to introduce charges should be implemented in a manner that does not adversely affect retail users of digital payment services.
