Thrissur: The 37th Kerala Science Congress began on a high note at Kerala Agricultural University, Vellanikkara, with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurating the event by lighting a digital lamp. The CM delivered a powerful message on the need to uphold scientific temper and resist rising superstitions that threaten rational thought.
Highlighting the Science Congress’ role in Kerala’s scientific and technological progress, the CM stressed the importance of scientific resistance against attempts to blur the line between science and superstition.
He also took a firm stance against unscientific claims being propagated on national science platforms, referring to a recent controversial statement by an IIT director. The CM called for the protection of research and development from being influenced by irrational beliefs.
Kerala is making significant strides in combating climate change, with a goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, he said. He also emphasized the need for global scientific collaborations to elevate Kerala’s research ecosystem.
The event honored Dr. Vrinda Mukundan and Dr. V.S. Harish, who received the Kerala State Young Scientist Awards and the CM’s Gold Medal for their outstanding contributions to research.
Minister for Revenue K. Rajan, a guest of honor, highlighted the historical resistance against science and reaffirmed Kerala’s commitment to scientific progress despite societal challenges.
The Congress, chaired by Prof. K.P. Sudheer, also featured insightful addresses from Prof. M.K. Jayaraj, Dr. B. Ashok, and Chief Minister’s Science Advisor M.C. Dathan, among others.
ISRO’s S. Somanath to Receive Kerala Science Award
In a major announcement, the 2023 Kerala Science Award will be presented to former ISRO Chairman S. Somanath, as declared by CM Vijayan. The date and venue of the ceremony will be decided later.
