Kerala Government to Hold Crucial Talks with ASHA Workers Amid Prolonged Protest

The Kerala government has invited Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) workers for a fresh round of discussions after their 52-day-long protest outside the Secretariat. Health Minister Veena George will meet with representatives of the protesting workers and trade union leaders at her office on Thursday at 3 PM.

ASHA workers have been demanding a hike in their monthly honorarium from ₹7,000 to ₹21,000, along with a one-time retirement benefit of ₹5 lakh. However, previous negotiations failed due to the state’s financial limitations.

This renewed dialogue comes after Minister Veena George’s recent meeting with Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda in New Delhi, where discussions were held regarding increasing central incentives for ASHA workers and clearing pending dues under the National Health Mission (NHM).

The Kerala ASHA Health Workers’ Association (KAHWA) has expressed cautious optimism about the talks. State President V.K. Sadanandan stated, “We have high expectations. Our demands are clear, and we will not end our protest until they are met.”

The protest has also drawn political attention, with Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi voicing support for the ASHA workers. She acknowledged their vital role in Kerala’s healthcare system and emphasized solidarity with their cause.

As discussions unfold, both the government and ASHA workers remain hopeful for a resolution that balances the workers’ demands with the state’s financial situation.
