Delhi Moves Toward Green Revolution: Fossil Fuel Vehicle Ownership to Be Capped at Two Per Household

New Delhi: In a game-changing step to tackle rising air pollution and traffic chaos, the Delhi government is drafting bold new rules to limit fossil fuel vehicle ownership. As per the proposed policy, each household will soon be allowed to own a maximum of just two petrol or diesel vehicles.

The sweeping plan also includes a complete ban on the sale of fuel-powered two-wheelers—including motorcycles and scooters—by April 1, 2027. This policy is part of a broader vision to transform Delhi’s transportation landscape and improve air quality.

To boost the adoption of eco-friendly vehicles, the government is considering tax exemptions on hybrid cars, which could reduce their cost by up to 15%. The ultimate goal is to ensure that 30% of all vehicles in Delhi are electric by 2030.

An additional 50 paise cess per litre of petrol has also been proposed to further discourage fossil fuel use.

With 4.5 lakh two-wheelers sold in Delhi in 2024 alone, and two-wheelers making up 67% of newly registered vehicles in 2022–23, the government views curbing their numbers as critical to fighting pollution.

If approved, these landmark measures could mark a major turning point in Delhi’s battle against environmental degradation—paving the way for a cleaner, greener future.
