New Delhi: The Congress on Tuesday accused the BJP-led government of attempting to “bulldoze” a “deeply flawed, unconstitutional and anti-federal” delimitation exercise, amid discussions on implementing the women’s reservation law.
The opposition party claimed that the proposed move, linked to increasing the strength of the Lok Sabha, is being advanced under the pretext of ensuring women’s representation. It alleged that both the intent and content of the proposed legislation could harm parliamentary democracy.
According to the proposal under circulation among Members of Parliament, the number of Lok Sabha seats could be increased from 543 to around 850. This expansion is aimed at operationalising the women’s reservation law ahead of the 2029 general elections, following a delimitation exercise based on the latest available census data.
The Congress, however, argued that such a major restructuring without wider consensus could undermine the federal structure and disproportionately impact certain states.
