Centre proposes increasing Lok Sabha strength to 850, Bill shared with MPs

New Delhi: The Union government is considering a proposal to increase the strength of the Lok Sabha from the current 543 seats to around 850, aiming to reflect population growth and improve representation.

The proposal, which has been informally shared with Members of Parliament, is linked to the long-pending delimitation exercise expected after the next Census. The move is intended to ensure a more balanced distribution of constituencies based on demographic changes across states.

Officials indicated that the plan is still at a preliminary stage, and discussions are ongoing. If implemented, it would mark one of the most significant structural changes in India’s parliamentary system in decades.
