Thrissur: A red alert has been issued along the coastal areas of Thrissur district following a warning of the possibility of swell waves (Kallakkadal) and strong sea erosion. The India National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has forecast waves of up to 1.8 metres from Tuesday night until August 20.
Following the warning, the Thrissur district administration has issued urgent safety guidelines for coastal areas. Entry to all beaches in the district has been completely prohibited for tourists and the general public, and all recreational activities along the coast have been banned.
Fishermen have also been instructed not to venture into the sea under any circumstances during the alert period.
Public warnings will be issued through loudspeakers in coastal areas and sirens operated by the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA). Emergency cell broadcast messages may also be sent to mobile phones through the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), depending on the situation.
The Coastal Police, Fisheries Department and local self-government institutions will maintain strict surveillance along the coastline. According to the District Collector, the restrictions will remain in force until the alert is withdrawn.
