Srinagar: President Droupadi Murmu has conferred the National Handloom Award on two master weavers from Budgam district of Jammu and Kashmir in recognition of their contribution to the traditional art of Kani weaving.
Kani weaving is an ancient and highly intricate handloom tapestry technique from Kashmir. Artisans use small wooden spools, known as kanis, to interlock coloured threads directly into the fabric, creating intricate floral and paisley patterns.
The craft originated in the heritage village of Kanihama in central Kashmir and is known for its painstaking production process. Depending on the complexity of the design, a single Kani weave can take anywhere from six months to several years to complete.
The award recognises the contribution of the two master weavers towards preserving and promoting Kashmir’s rich handloom heritage and the traditional Kani weaving craft.
