Caracas: At least 589 people have been killed and 2,980 others injured after a powerful earthquake struck Venezuela, officials said. Many people are still reported missing, raising fears that the death toll could increase.
The Latin American nation was hit by two strong earthquakes in quick succession, causing widespread destruction. The worst damage was reported in the port city of La Guaira and the capital, Caracas, where the highest number of casualties has been recorded.
Rescue operations have yet to begin in several affected areas, with authorities warning that delays could lead to more fatalities. Efforts are being hampered by a shortage of heavy machinery needed to clear collapsed buildings.
More than 250 buildings collapsed in La Guaira alone. The Venezuelan government has also come under criticism for its handling and coordination of rescue operations in the aftermath of the disaster.
