Indore: Banana cultivated in Burhanpur district of Madhya Pradesh has been awarded the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag, joining the growing list of food products from the state to receive the recognition, officials said on Tuesday.
Burhanpur bananas are widely known for their distinctive flavour, appealing colour, and superior quality. According to officials, the district’s favourable climate, fertile soil, and unique geographical conditions contribute significantly to the crop’s characteristics, setting it apart from bananas grown in other regions.
Commercial cultivation of bananas in Burhanpur began around 1960 and has since become a major agricultural activity in the district. At present, bananas are cultivated across approximately 26,120 hectares of land, with nearly 18,640 farmers engaged in the sector.
The GI tag is expected to enhance the market value of Burhanpur bananas, provide better recognition to local farmers, and strengthen the region’s agricultural economy.
